A brief history of mountain bikes

Throughout the early 90's, examples of off road cycling can be seen as riders began making modifications as 'cyclo-cross' bikesto keep fit throughout the wintertime. It genuinely became a sport in the 1940's, although the term 'mountain biking' had been unheard of.
The 1970's led to 'balloon tired' cruisers being modified with gears and BMX style handle bars that had been called 'klunkers'. Road bicycle companies then began developing mountain bikes using light-weight and durable materials which produced the original purpose based mountain bike being developed in 1978. This resulted in the 1st mass produced mountain bike, the Specialized Stumpjumper, being developed in 1982. At this moment however, the bicycle industry was not impressed using the prospect of mountain bikes, and believed the sport was ultimately purely a short-term fad which would pass. The larger manufacturers (like Schwinn and Fuji) ignored them and failed to foresee the explosion which was soon to arrive of great interest in 'adventure sports.' The sport was ultimately newer companies of which specifically set themselves in place to manufacture mountain bikes of which soared, and by the 1990's mountain biking had graduated from being a small following to mainstream production and interest. Front suspension forks were designed during this time period of which would supply a slight shock absorber on the front tyre.
However, the last decade has produced an entire host of different forms of suspension and light-weight materials being employed to offer the best quality mountain bike experience. Bikers possess the personal choice of front suspension, full suspension, light weight gearing, and disc brakes all competing to present just about the most exhilarating experience for off-roading.
The future of mountain biking is unclear, but areas which manufacturers will probably be looking into is going to be to integrate internal gearing and building upon what has become so successful over the years, such is improving gearing, braking and also the light-weight components that make up the ultra-modern day mountain bike.
